FLORENCE

"Florence is a poem in stone and color." Mark Twain

Firenze is the undeniable capital of Tuscany. History, art, and architecture abound in this city.

We stayed at Palazzo Dal Borgo, an historic Renaissance residence that was previously owned by the Medici dal Borgo family. The hotel had the tiniest elevator we have ever been in, but we were so grateful there was one. The service was outstanding. Quite charming overall.

Florence is a lively, bustling city. Our first day was spent with a local guide touring on foot to the main square and surrounding areas. We then went to the Galleria dell'Accademia to see the sculpture of David by Michelangelo. David is much bigger in person. What a marvel!

The next day we went to the Uffizi Gallery accompanied by Paul, a very entertaining local guide. The Uffizi was our favorite attraction in Florence. If you are interested in Renaissance art, this is the place.

That afternoon we decided to hike to the Piazzale Michelangelo for a spectacular view of the entire city. It was worth the hike! At the end of the day Sally decided to venture out to the local laundromat. We had been doing sink laundry for smaller items as recommended by Rick Steves, but it was time for a real washing machine. Sally was nervous about being successful with her outing. Luckily, there were two young college students there (who were both from the US) who assisted her with the machines. Reset on clothes, and ready for the next few days!

Horse drawn carriages are still up and running in Florence. Regulations protecting the well being of the horses are in place and they are not allowed to operate in temps over 35 celcius.

The painting is known as the Doni Tondo, or The Holy Family, and is the only finished panel painting by Michelangelo to survive the ages.

Tour dinner at Giglio Rosso. Dino proposed to Stephanie in the main dining room a couple of years ago. If you visit Florence, you are going to want to eat at Giglio Rosso.

Hike up to Piazzale Michelangelo when in Florence. It will be most rewarding. The views are incredible.

Verrocchio and a young Leonardo da Vinci are credited with creating the The Baptism of Christ. Leonardo may have painted the angel to the left, and much of the background landscape.
