A mystery...
Where was the photo taken in Venice?
But first...

My dad was a WWII veteran and took part in the invasion of Sicily. Pop made his way through the Italian campaign taking part in all of the major offensives. After getting wounded (where we do not know), he spent some time in Venice recuperating. The war soon became a distant memory to my father. His war stories revolved around the Italian people and culture, not the horrors of war. While he never returned, he spent a good part of his life recreating Sicilian dishes and speaking Italian.

Where the mystery started... Pencil art created by my cousin in 1979. I found the piece in my attic laying dormant for decades. I spent years trying to locate the original photo. Nobody had it, and many family members had never even seen it.

And then, during a family reunion in June 2025, my niece pulled out a couple of old photo albums from her own attic and the long lost picture revealed itself.

With modern AI, my cousin Gary, the original artist that did the pencil art, produced this image. With the help of Stephanie and local Venetians, we think this could be the patio of Paradiso Restaurant. Thanks to Rick and his team of experts for help solving this mystery!

What do you think? Al and Slim would be sitting on the other side of the fence. The two trees seem to be major clues.

So we think we found the location of the lost photo...but who was Lee? And did she own a camera?
